Juryo promotions and retirees after Haru Basho

Details

The Japan Sumo Association (Nihon Sumo Kyokai) held the usual post-basho meeting to announce the Makushita rikishi that will be promoted to the Juryo Division for the upcoming Summer tourney in May.

For this tournament 19-year-old Takagenji from Takanohana Beya will make his debut as a new sekitori after ending Haru Basho with a 4-3 result (Ms1w). So former Yokozuna Takanohana will count on three sekitori at the Kokugikan in May.

21-year-old Meisei (M3w, 5-2) will also be promoted to Juryo. He already competed in sumo's second division in November, so he will gain his second promotion ever to the salary ranks.

Also, this time there are 8 rikishi who called it quit:

Makushita: Ryuonami
Sandanme: Tokinowaka
Jonidan: Hamaazuma and Takenoumi
Jonokuchi: Himekatsuyama and Hokutoryu (46 year-old, second-oldest active rikishi after Hanakaze)
Banzuke-gai: Yusei and Komaminato
