Juryo promotions and retirees after Aki Basho

The Japan Sumo Association has announced the names of the wrestlers that will be promoted to Juryo from Makushita. For the upcoming Kyushu Basho in November, there will be two new sekitori, Asanowaka (former Terasawa) and Hiradoumi, while Kotokuzan will be back to the salaried ranks.

Mongolian-born komusubi Ichinojo takes Japanese citizenship

Sumo wrestler Ichinojo, who holds the sport's fourth-highest rank of komusubi, has given up his Mongolian nationality and become a Japanese citizen, an official government publication showed Wednesday.

Record-holding grand champion Hakuho to retire

Yokozuna Hakuho, winner of a record 45 grand sumo tournament titles, informed the Japan Sumo Association on Monday of his decision to retire. JSA President Hakkaku said during a meeting that the grand champion has conveyed his decision to call it a career, according to Hironori Yano, the head of the JSA's Yokozuna Deliberation Council.

Aki Day 15: Terunofuji crowns yokozuna debut with 5th career championship

Terunofuji completed his sterling debut as sumo's 73rd yokozuna by winning the Autumn Grand Sumo Tournament. The grand champion entered the final day one win ahead of No. 10 maegashira Myogiryu (11-4), whose loss to new sekiwake Meisei (8-7) ensured Terunofuji's title.
